At Tuesday’s City Council meeting, Police Chief Glen Hill recognized several police and fire department employees for their volunteer work with the Santa Cop and Santa Spot programs.
Chief Hill said the two programs are thought of as Christmas programs that help needy families with toys for children and food for holiday meals. But he noted, the programs are operated year round to assist families during crisis situations.
With the recent down turn in the nation’s economy Chief Hill said, the need has been great and the two programs have stepped up, helped more families than ever. Last year Santa Cop and Santa Spot helped:
455 families
21 adults
1381 children
2 senior citizens
“Over 1,100 volunteer hours were contributed to make these programs successful,” Chief Hill said.
Chief Hill recognized a few workers who were instrumental in the programs success, Officer Mark Calvert, Sergeant Chris Chopin and Pam Evans with Santa Cop and Debra Willis, Brenda Harmon, Randy and Sandy Rachels with Santa Spot.
“For without their participation and their pushing and motivation this would not happen,” said Chief Hill.
