AirHogs add 2009 American Association player of the Year
Porter, who will enter his tenth season of professional baseball this year, led the league in batting in 2009, with a .375 batting average, 21 homeruns, 86 RBI, and a .456 on-base percentage. He was also named American Association Batter of the Week four times, in addition to a nod as Batter of the Month for the month of June.
“I’m excited to join the AirHogs, and have the chance to play in a great stadium, and under a great coach,” Porter said. “I hear wonderful things about ‘Inky’ [Incaviglia] and am looking forward to playing for him.”
Drafted by the Anaheim Angels in 2001, Porter spent the two seasons in AAA before coming to the Wichita Wingnuts. He attended college at Texas A&M University, where he was a standout two-sport athlete, also starring as a receiver on the Aggies’ football team. He was also drafted by the Houston Texans of the National Football League in 2003 and attended training camp before opting to pursue his career in baseball.
A native of West Point, TX, Porter resides in Keller, TX, said he looks forward to playing close to home. He and his wife are expecting their first child in September 2010.
The AirHogs will start their third season on May 14th at QuikTrip Park against the Pensacola Pelicans.
