Police prevent suicide attempt

Grand Prairie police successfully prevented a distraught 28 year-old man from committing suicide Monday after he threatened to jump from a bridge on the eastbound side Interstate 20 over Great Southwest Parkway.

Police spokesman Detective John Brimmer said officers were dispatched around 5:30 p.m. to the bridge and found the suicidal man sitting on the bridge railing.

Evening rush-hour traffic along Interstate 20 and Great Southwest Parkway had to be shut down and rerouted as officers negotiated with the man who at one point placed a leg over the railing and threatened to jump.

When the man moved away from the railing, officers were able to surround and subdue him without a struggle.

Detective Brimmer said the man was carried to Parkland Hospital for evaluation.
