Weather Service names city Storm Ready Community

Grand Prairie became one of only eighteen cities in the metroplex to receive the National Weather Service’s designation as a Storm Ready Community.

Storm Ready communities are better prepared through advanced planning, education and awareness to respond to the threat of all types of severe weather.

Criteria to become Storm Ready include:

  • 24-hour warning systems
  • An Emergency Operations Center
  • A variety of ways to receive and disseminate warning information
  • Formal emergency plans
Other Storm Ready Communities in the metroplex are:
Allen, Benbrook, Burleson, Carrollton, Commerce, Coppell, Denton, Fort Worth, Frisco, Garland, Grand Prairie, Keller, Lewisville, Lucas, North Richland Hills, Plano, Southlake and Wylie.

The National Weather Service makes it presentation to the city on March 2 at the City Council Briefing. The city will receive Storm Ready road signs to place as appropriate on major thoroughfares.

In addition to being a Storm Ready Community, Grand Prairie recognizes Severe Weather Awareness Week February 21-27, 2010. Helpful guidelines of what to do and how to prepare for a variety of common north Texas disasters including flood, tornado, hail, winter storm, lightening and high wind is available on the National Weather Service website or visit www.KnoWhat2do.com.
